The Learning Resource Centre is open throughout the day for students and staff, offering an exciting range of fiction and non-fiction titles to support reading for pleasure and the curriculum. A Chartered Librarian is always available to advise students on reading choices and help with research. Two computer areas are housed within the LRC and teachers regularly book classes in for lessons.
All students in Years 7 and 8 follow the Accelerated Reader Programme which is designed to encourage and support reading for pleasure and comprehension skills. Students have a fortnightly timetabled reading lesson in the LRC in which they read books at their individual levels and take quizzes. Small group and 1:1 reading sessions are also arranged for struggling or reluctant readers.
A quiet reading area has been created, housing a range of comfortable beanbags for those who simply want to chill out and read a good book at break or lunchtime.
An after-school homework club takes place in the LRC on Monday to Thursday until 5pm, as well as two lunchtime clubs – ‘Oakreads’ Book Group on a Wednesday and the ‘Burgess Hill’s Best Book Award’ group on a Monday.
Students are welcome to search for and borrow books for personal reading via the Eclipse library management system. However, they remain responsible for the safekeeping and return of any resources. Whilst we do not charge fines for overdue items, charges will be incurred for lost or damaged books.Events
